An Indigo Morning Homebred
We've always been known for our turf lines; Belladonna is no exception to our standards. Her sire Jessie James raced alongside our foundation stallions Merry Bay King and Shiver Me Timbers. He didn't reach their level of fame as a racehorse and instead became a very famous Western speed horse. He is a dual horse, but his foals have tended to lean turf. His first two - Infinite Warcry and Dazzling Dame - became very famous grade one routers; both twinned not just in reality but in records, with Dazzling Dame winning the Breeders Cup Turf Marathon and Infinite Warcry taking it the year after (on top of many other HoTY victories each). Jessie James also produced Wild Daisy and Wild Annie. He seemed to cross well with fresh-pedigreed turf mares, which is exactly what Fleet Majesty was. Fleet Majesty was an HoTY-winning create mare and Jessie James looked like the perfect stud to bring some fire and flair to her otherwise calm nature. Belladonna is the first foal of her dam, who has also produced Majestic Cry and Leroisdesrois. Jessie James is now pensioned from stud.
Jockey: Krystal Yhate
Last Ran: July Week Four Leg Type: Mid-Pack Despite her tall height, Belladonna is not thickly built as older brother Infinite Warcry was. She takes after Dazzling Dame instead. From the minute she steps into the post parade, Belladonna proclaims her individuality with fierce glares throughout her warm-up. She catches eyes, but never lets the attention get to her. She accepts the gates and loads easily, provided no gate person touches her. When they open, Bell flies out. She doesn't lumber behind, instead placing herself in the thick of things in the pack. Bell has the long, ground-covering stride of her father, but the competitive spirit of her dam. She stays with the pack until the final turn, moving as they move, but once they all start gunning for the wire Bell truly comes alive. She will shoot for the lead, carving up a path on the outside. It doesn't matter how far to the outside Bell ends up running, for she will get the job done. Her acceleration in the final stretch is superb, and with placement on the outside few horses get in her way. Belladonna is perhaps the most talented stretch runner SOPS has trained. The minute that ground opens up in front of her, Bell's attitude ceases to be an obstacle to her as it is in many situations; everything is cast aside for the sake of securing a win. Belladonna sweeps for the lead and the other horses in the field better be ready for her closing charge. Bell needs little encouragement when she races - her rider is simply there to make sure no horses get in her way and the gate crew makes it home alive. Y16 Prospect of the Year |
Roses Have ThornsBelladonna sets new standards for beauty. She has a finely sculpted head, gorgeous conformation, strong legs and a way of moving that breeders kill for. If only her personality lived up to her appearance! Bell is not a nice horse. We were hoping to balance Jessie James's fire with Fleet Majesty's docile, hard-working nature, and instead we got a hellion in Belladonna. Bell is one hundred percent like her sire. Biting, kicking, rearing, baring her teeth - it takes almost nothing to set Bell off. She simply likes to be pushy to both horse and human. If you're to command her respect, you'd better fight back by showing her just how little you'll tolerate her attitude. When Bell respects you, she'll back off; if she knows that you're scared of her, you've handed over a weapon that she'll never relinquish. Her dangerous personality requires a firm hand and a no-nonsense attitude. Belladonna is not the brightest crayon in the box, too used to using her attitude in order to get her way, so once you've overcome her usual tactics you've understood the horse. Bell lets nothing phase her, easily adapting to new situations, though she will of course do so while throwing a temper tantrum. She is a high maintenance horse and not for the faint of heart. Bell needs to have a daily routine that is followed to the letter. She is picky, which is probably why she throws as many tantrums as she does. Her best - and worst - attribute is her stubbornness. Bell never gives something up once she's set her mind to it. It was almost impossible to gate-train her until one day, a month after the rest of her crop had overcome the device, Bell finally relented. Her stubbornness is her biggest asset on the track, as well as her speed and stamina. Bell responds to challenges and will not give up until well after the race is over.
