An Indigo Morning Homebred
As a gift from Intrepid, we had been sitting on a reserve to their foundation blue hen mare Rosalind for a long time. Rosalind had produced the likes of Breeding Hall of Fame inductee and MHS Triple Crown winner Admiral's Revenge, famous blue hen producer and Breeding Hall of Fame inductee Requiem, G1 Admirable (who also produced two G1 mares herself, Meritorious and Impressionable), and many others. Rosalind had an old, classic pedigree and a rich legacy of breeding success - who better to pair her with then our own foundation sensation Merry Bay King? Merry Bay King is the sire of Hall of Fame/Breeding Hall of Fame inductee and Triple Crown/four-time Breeders Cup winner Impressario (himself the sire of Canadian Triple Crown winner Italian Ice, Turf Triple Tiara winner Impress The Moonlight, and Turf Triple Crown winner Pandora among many others), Hall of Fame inductee and Breeders Cup Turf winner Simply A Flyer, grade one Breeders Cup Juvenile/Marathon/Dirt Mile winner Bank On Greatness, Hall of Fame sprinter and three-time Breeders Cup winner Ventura, grade one HoTY winners Take Flight and Natural Selection, and a whole slew of others. The combination of these two blue hen producers has given as Hyperion, the heir of one of the richest legacies known to horse racing.
Jockey: Amber Black
Last Ran: July Week Three Leg Type: Closer Per is beyond tactical on the track. He takes note of the field, sizing them up while strutting through the post parade with Amber Black aboard. He disdains the paddock ponies and cannot be warmed up alongside one before a race - it's simply not effective enough for him. Instead, Amber takes him around the track, and still Per sizes everybody up. He loads like a king - no gate hand touches him, for to do so is to receive the Stare and, if feeling moody, a nip from the regal colt. He breaks with all the speed of a purebred racehorse and finds his way behind the rest. Per delights in placing himself off the pace, monitoring it throughout the race and then hunting down every last horse. With each passing furlong, Per hunts another one or two horses, passing them in clumps and easing his way up the field. He is the gradual closer who every horse knows is coming. Per passes each with style, just getting faster with every furlong, until the field hits the final turn and Per explodes into full flight. He will roar up to challenge, on the outside if necessary, and once he gets that lead he will not let it go. He won't slow down either even if every horse is beaten; Per likes empty space behind him and wins by open lengths if he can. His full heart is on display each time on the track. Per hunts each horse and then fights for the victory he feels he deserves. |
Long live the kingHyperion - the union of two great foundation legacies into one horse. The last time a Merry Bay King colt raced for SOPS, he ended up winning the Triple Crown and four different Breeders Cup races, among other accolades. Per looks like his brother. He has the same strong build, soulful partnership with Amber Black and that look in his eye. Unlike his brother, Per is aggressive. The unruly nature of a juvenile Merry Bay King as well as the fire of Rosalind combined to make nothing short of a bossy, commanding, regal colt. Per has strength and flexes it against others. Per has speed and uses it on the racetrack to outpace the rest. Per is competitive and will not take anything sitting down. He is regal when he moves. There is a sort of way to him that is difficult to define - kingly grace is the best way to characterize it. Per is amazingly athletic and loves to work. He puts his best hoof forward every time and never gives less than one hundred percent of what is asked - if the person asking is Amber Black, that is. Everybody else gets the Stare and is shut out from this horse completely. Off the track, Per displays a passion for ruling; on the track, Per displays a passion for winning. He revels in being the top horse in every environment, and to be treated as otherwise is to foster rivalries that Per will never forget, even delight in having as he seeks the win on the track.
